PRACTICE INFORMATION

Provided you live within our Practice boundary (right), you may register with our Practice. Please bring your medical card and cards for all members of your family who are to register to the surgery. All newly registered patients will be asked to complete a simple questionnaire and will be invited to attend for a ‘New Patient’ check-up/assessment which enables us to meet you and assess your medical needs. Please note that you can consult any of the doctors in the partnership. If you change your address you should let us know as soon as possible.

Banchory Group Practice, part of South Aberdeenshire Local Health Partnership, is a semi-rural general practice serving Banchory, a small town with a population of just over 8,000. We also cover patients in the surrounding areas of Echt and Torphins to the north, Strachan and Finzean to the south, Kincardine O’Neil to the West and Durris and Drumoak to the East. Over the past 25 years or so, Banchory as a town has grown significantly, mainly as a result of the oil industry in nearby Aberdeen. The practice population at present stands at just over 12,000 with significant numbers of both elderly patients and young families. The ongoing expansion at the Hill of Banchory and elsewhere within the surrounding area will result in the figure rising over the next few years.. Despite the population expansion, the practice has always evolved to meet the needs of the local population and prides itself in being a forward thinking and patient centred organisation.

Language and Communication Skills

A number of team members have between them a working knowledge of French, Spanish, Dutch, and Gaelic. Translated literature is available from Grampian Health Board on request.

A micro telephone enhancement pad is provided at the front desk for patients hard of hearing.

We also have access to Language Line, an interpretation and translation service. This enables patients of different nationalities to describe their symptoms in their native tongue via a three-way conversation with an interpreter at the other end of the phone. If you would like to use this type of service, just notify the reception staff when you check in.

Data Protection Act

Certain services provided by the Clinical staff in this Practice are subject to payment verification from the local Health Board and routine requests for information will be made. The sharing of such information with other Health Professionals is covered under the Data Protection Act. The leaflet ‘NHS code of Practice in Protecting Patient Confidentiality’ provides more comprehensive information and is available on application to the Practice Manager.

Disabled Access

The practice recognise that the layout of our building is not perfect for some disabled patients. If you anticipate problems please contact the receptionists in advance of your appointment and we will try and assist with your problem. There are two disabled parking spaces outside building and we now have electric sliding doors and a toilet for the disabled. A hearing loop is also available at the reception desk for hearing aids.

The Practice provides medical services to Glen O’Dee Community Hospital, a 54-bedded unit of GP beds, long-term geriatric beds and a psychogeriatric ward, which is under the supervision of the area Psychiatry for the Elderly Consultant (currently Dr Jane Haddow)

The GPs make use of a number of these beds for patients with problems not requiring the full services of Aberdeen, those recovering from major surgical/medical problems, and also to provide a local palliative care service. Find out more about the history of Glen O'Dee.
